Head and Neck Surgical Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction

A. Personal Statement

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at Duke University Health Systems.  I have a broad background in treating head and neck cancer and in complex microvascular reconstruction.  My early research was focused on Cancer Cachexia, a wasting syndrome characterized by weight loss, anorexia, asthenia and anemia.  During this time, I successfully focused on developing a murine animal model designed to study the effects of this cancer wasting syndrome.  When then used this animal model to look at reasons for the development of cancer wasting as well as some therapeutic targets for prevention of cachexia.

In addition to studying cachexia, I have clinical interest in researching and writing about head and neck cancers (mucosal, skin, salivary), the outcomes of microvascular reconstructive surgery, and health disparities research.
