Overview

Anesthesiology is a specialty that cares for patients of all ages as they are being treated for a wide variety of conditions. This requires broad knowledge of physiology and technical skills to apply in patient care. Therefore anesthesiology is a diverse specialty area encompassing all the systems of the body and it includes both generalists and sub-specialists. Grand Rounds is a weekly one hour presentation incorporating active learning techniques including: case studies, the audience responds to questions, panel discussions, evidence based topic reviews, and question and answer opportunities. In this series a wide range of diverse clinical cases and a wide variety of topics are presented which are relevant to both generalists and sub-specialists involved in perioperative care.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. Apply the most current evidence-based medicine and literature to their practice
  2. Apply specific use of diagnostic procedures and medications
  3. Apply current best practice in education to the teaching and assessment of trainees
  4. Identify appropriate resources for current information on a variety of topics
  5. Reinforce accountability for providing high-quality care
  6. Identify events resulting in adverse patient outcomes
  7. Foster discussion of adverse events
  8. Identify and disseminate information and insights about patient care that are drawn from experience
  9. Create a forum in which physicians acknowledge and address reasons for mistakes
  10. Improve clinical appraisal & assimilate evidence skills
  11. Read a journal article critically
  12. Apply knowledge of study design & statistical methods
  13. Keep up with the current evidence based literature
