Chronic Idiopathic Constipation, 23D08 - 11/29/2022

Internal Medicine is a diverse specialty area encompassing all the systems of the body, and includes generalists and subspecialists. Grand rounds is a weekly one-hour presentation incorporating active learning techniques including: case studies, the audience responds to questions with audience response systems, small group discussions, panel discussions, and question and answer opportunities. Because of the diversity of internal medicine and the wide range of diverse clinical cases seen, a wide variety of topics are presented which are relevant to both generalists and subspecialists.

Overall Professional Practice Gaps:
1.   Practitioners may not be up to date with current knowledge of certain clinical diseases which will entail an analysis based on epidemiology and pathogeneses of the diseases, clinical recognition and diagnosis and treatment. 
2.  Practitioners may need updates to enhance their teaching skills.
3.  Practitioners may need updates to enhance the role of performance and quality improvement (PI/QI) in patient care.
4.  Practitioners may not be aware of the role of biomedical research in health care.

Session Professional Practice Gap:
Gap 1:   Practitioners may not understand the need to differentiate chronic constipation from disorders of defecation. 
Gap 2: Practitioners may not be aware of the new secretagogues available to treat constipation. 
Gap 3: Practitioners may be unaware of the Rome Criteria for functional constipation and how these impact diagnosis.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:
Identify patients with chronic constipation, defecation disorders, and slow transit constipation. 
Distinguish the difference between chronic constipation and IBS-constipation.   
Employ therapies for constipation beyond simple laxatives. 
Choose an approach to therapy in line with current guidelines. 
Recognize the need for consideration of surgical therapies.
