About

The Irwin H. Brown Office of Continuing Medical Education is a division of the Executive Dean's Office in the College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma. The College of Medicine is one of seven constituent colleges at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  The office began informally in 1949 with the generation of several grants and operated under this format until 1963 when the Office of Continuing Medical Education was officially established.  The office was ACCME accredited in 1987. In 1993, Roger E. Sheldon, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Pediatrics was named Assistant Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Jim Romero, Ph.D. was appointed Director.  In 1995, the office name was changed to the Irwin H. Brown Office of Continuing Medical Education to honor the memory of Dr. Irwin H. Brown, M.D., a respected leader in our community and a strong supporter of CME.  In 2004, Jim Romero, Ph.D. retired as Director of the Office of CME and Margie Miller, M.S., C.P.P., was appointed to the position.

In June 2010, after 17 years of excellent service and commitment to continuing medical education and oversight of the Office of Continuing Medical Education, Dr. Roger Sheldon retired.   Many changes have occurred in CME offerings and requirements during which Dr. Sheldon has provided exceptional service to the College in his part-time position as an assistant dean. Prior to Dr. Sheldon’s retirement, M. Dewayne Andrews, M.D., M.A.C.P, Vice President for Health Affairs, Executive Dean, College of Medicine appointed Chittur A. Sivaram, M.D., David Ross Boyd Professor of Medicine, as the new Associate Dean; and also announced that the Irwin H. Brown Office of Continuing Medical Education would be updating its name to the Irwin H. Brown Office of Continuing Professional Development.  This name change is reflective of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine’s expansion of continuing medical education to include lifelong learning and professional development for physicians and others in the health care workforce because of their critical importance to improving patient outcomes. 


Overall Mission

The mission of the University of Oklahoma (OU) College of Medicine (COM), Irwin H. Brown Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to provide lifelong learning for physicians and members of the interprofessional team based on documented needs and professional gaps derived from health and practice data. Activities and educational interventions approved by the Office of CPD support desirable physician attributes including six-core competencies of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). 
These educational activities and educational interventions will result in changes in learner competence and performance, and ultimately lead to enhanced patient care, improved patient outcomes, and coordination with the healthcare team.
Additionally, as an integral part of OU Health, the Office of CPD supports the institution’s mission of leading healthcare in education, research and patient care.
