2022-2023 Congenital Heart Center Case-Based Conference, 23D19

Congenital heart disease frequently encompasses derangements of all bodily systems. For this reason a wide variety of specialty areas are required in order to care for these complex patients. Each week we hold a multidisciplinary conference where the management of these patients is discussed. The duration of the conference is generally 1.5 - 2 hours, and active participation by all attendees is encouraged via case studies, the audience responding to questions, small group discussion, and question and answer opportunities. The ultimate goals of the conference are:
1) to assure that the needs of the patient are understood.
2) The needs of the the patient are being met
3) A long-term care plan is developed, and 
4) Adequate communication with the patient or their care-provider is being performed.

Overall Professional Practice Gap:
A wide variety of specialty areas are required in order to care for congenital heart disease patients. There is a need to review diagnostic and treatment issues and options.

1. Evaluate the preoperative history and physical examination of a child with congenital heart disease
2. Identify appropriate preoperative testing, and the correct interpretation of these tests
3. Identify best clinical practices in the management of these patients
4. Distinguish errors and risk factors that can lead to complications
5. Integrate effective communication among our expanding group
