Overview

The 2023 Virtual Mark Allen Everett, MD, Skin of Color Symposium will be presented virtually by the OU COM Department of Dermatology on Friday, May 5, 2023.

This one-day symposium will feature multiple national dermatology experts in skin of color, as well as other professional speakers selected for their knowledge and commitment to diversity in medical education and healthcare. The purpose of the symposium is to(1) increase the knowledge of its attendees, both medical and non-medical, regarding skin of color condition and (2) increase the awareness of diversity gaps and cultural competence in the field of medicine.

Overall Professional Practice Gaps
Gap 1: Healthcare providers may not have the competence, skills, or possess cultural humility to properly treat dermatologic conditions in skin of color patients, which can affect the proper management and overall health.

Gap 2: Healthcare providers may lack the competence and skills to address the biases that affect healthcare disparities and improve health outcomes of patients of color.

Overall Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this Course, participants will improve their competence and performance by being
able to:
1. Prepare physicians, advanced practice providers, students, medical trainees, aestheticians, and hair
care specialists to recognize the unique dermatologic features of skin of color.
2. Assemble a forum to exchange valuable information regarding medical, surgical, and cosmetic
dermatologic conditions of skin of color.
3. Examine cultural competence and bias as it relates to dermatology and the field of medicine at large.
4. Recognize national experts in the field of dermatology.
