Overview

This intensive one day offering that includes a review and update on major subject areas in rheumatology. The faculty chosen to speak are recruited locally and from nationally recognized leaders in their fields.  The topics are chosen from the prior years participant suggestions.  The seminars are focused on practical diagnosis, treatment, and latest research in areas related to the successful delivery of rheumatology health care and patient outcomes. The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine faculty is nationally recognized for their expertise in the management of complex conditions that is unavailable elsewhere in the state, region or sometimes even the nation. This is a very fast-paced symposium with five lectures and one small group meeting.  Each session will include time for questions and answers. The course combines best practice strategies and education through case studies and lectures.

Overall Professional Practice Gaps:
Gap 1:  Many patients may have delays in lupus diagnosis limiting their access to new and developing therapies.
Gap 2:  Providers may have a difficult time treating patients with psoriasis (PsA) due to the comorbidities associated with this systemic immune-mediated disease.
Gap 3:  Providers treating patients with incident rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be unaware the synovial tissue analysis may help predict direct therapy.
Gap 4.  Many providers are unaware that COVID-19 infection is associated with new onset autoimmune disease and long COVID.
Gap 5:  Autoimmune skin disease can be challenging to treat and providers may be unaware of the advances that have been made regarding diagnosis and management.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to differentiate between the biologics approved for use in SLE to improve lupus outcomes.
  2. Discuss diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in Long Covid and Covid-19 induced autoimmune disease.
  3. Characterize the basic immune mechanisms affecting skin and synovio-entheseal inflammation in psoriatic disease
  4. Review the clinical manifestations and diagnostic work-up in psoriatic disease.
  5. Discuss current treatments and novel strategies in PsA.
  6. To appreciate the clinical course of RA from incidence to persistence to resistance.
  7. To appreciate the clinical course of RA from incidence to persistence to resistance.
  8. Apply the right clinical metrics to optimize RA treatment at each time point.
  9. Appreciate the morbidity of long covid and COVID-19 induced autoimmune disease.
  10. Appreciate the variable presentations of autoimmune skin disease.
  11. Review the treatment options for difficult autoimmune skin diseases.
