Overview

This morbidity and mortality conference is being done to improve quality of patient care and physician performance within the OUHSC Department of Surgery.  There is evidence that reviewing complications in care improves performance in physicians.

This conference will be held weekly in the Stanton L Young Biomedical Research Building room 109 so that the maximum number of significant cases can be reviewed and discussed. Residents will turn in interesting cases and complications every Thursday. The moderator will review the cases for relevance and avoid discussing recent topics. Residents familiar with the case will present so that the presentations contain relevant information. Presentations will be powerpoint and verbal in-person. All residents and faculty from the Department of Surgery will be involved in order to improve care across the department.

Overall Professional Practice Gaps:
As surgery has become more sub-specialized and more complex, surgeons are not always aware of current management and complications of treating frequently encountered surgical conditions. Gaps include:
1.  Preoperative optimization of complex patients
2. Subspecialty surgical techniques
3. Management of postoperative complications
