Soaring After the NICU: Supporting Community Physicians in Caring for NICU Graduates, Course #25D03

The Department of Neonatology, NICU Follow Up Care Program is providing continuing education for our faculty, trainees, and the public sector. Our focus is to provide education and support for those who are caring for the tiniest babies when they go out into the community after discharge. 
  These babies often are discharged with complex medical needs and not the average patient for the pediatrician and other support care providers across the state. 
  Observation in our clinical services, communication with these providers and requests for additional education and information has shown the need for our Department and Specialist to fulfill core competencies through inter professional communication by leading the conversations and education concerning standards of care and the treatment of these patients post NICU stay. 
Our multidisciplinary approach provides evidence-based standards and practices to help better equip providers with further knowledge to address the unique medical, nutritional and psychosocial concerns they may manage, with this population, in their practice.
 There will be a portion of the series that will include needs we see more often concerning infants with prenatal substance exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes that may show both short term and long term.     
 Infants who are exposed in utero to maternal drug use are at risk for medical and developmental complications. They require close monitoring both at the delivery hospital and after discharge home for signs and symptoms of withdrawal including poor feeding and growth, irritability and fussiness, poor sleep regulation and neurodevelopmental delays.
The three-part series  “Soaring after the NICU: Supporting Community Physicians in Caring for the NICU Graduate”  is to reinforce, as well as further, the practitioner's medical knowledge in caring for babies with more complex needs.  This will assist in the providers ability to appropriately assess and treat the  needs of the patient. This will improve patient care and may assist in a decrease of unnecessary emergency room visits and hospital stays.   
The series will be presented by knowledgeable qualified faculty and providers of OU who have an expertise in this area of patient care.   

The series format will be virtual which will enable providers from outside the Oklahoma City area to participate. 1 hour of CME for participation in each of the 3 series is requested.  

1. build competence in screening/referral and patient care practices for children who have experienced prenatal substance exposure.
2. Describe and educate pediatric outpatient providers on the unique medical needs of NICU graduates.
3. Apply evidence based nutrition knowledge to the care plan for preterm infants post NICU stay.
