Overview
ATS: Evidence-Based Teaching (EBT) Innovations Panel: Panelists will present examples of how they have incorporated EBT strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaving in their educational settings.

The Academy of Teaching Scholars (ATS) Education Week is designed to advance professional development and knowledge within medical education by providing high-quality educational opportunities, fostering collaborative learning through partnerships with external experts, and promoting research excellence through presentations. 

The purpose of this activity, other that what is stated above, is to build skills, inspire innovation, and facilitate the exchange of ideas to drive progress and excellence in our medical education community. This activity is necessary to bring awareness to the leading topics in medical education, specifically in Evidence-Based Teaching Methods and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The intended goals of the evidence-based teaching sessions are for attendees to describe key educational theories relevant to clinical educators, apply practical cognitive learning techniques, compare different learning theories to improve teaching in different contexts, and to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies to improve outcomes. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with excellent educators in their field with presented examples of how they have incorporated evidence-based teaching strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaving in their educational settings. 

The goal of the artificial intelligence session is to explain the potential benefits and problems of AI in medical education, compare expectations in medical education for learners and teachers before and after the introduction of AI, and devise strategies to maximize how well learners mee their expectations when AI is in use. The overall achievement of this activity is collaborative learning and recognition of the importance of strategic medical education. The target audience is OUCOM faculty and faculty from other colleges at OUHSC. 

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. Describe key educational theories relevant to clinical educators.
  2. Compare expectations in medical education for learners and teachers before and after the introduction of AI.
  3. Apply practical cognitive learning techniques.
  4. Compare different learning theories to improve teaching in different contexts.
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies to improve outcomes.
  6. Incorporate evidence-based teaching strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaving in their educational settings.
  7. Explain the potential benefits and problems of AI in medical education.
  8. Devise strategies to maximize how well learners meet their expectations when AI is in use.
