Overview

The Mark Allen Everett, MD, Skin of Color Symposium will be presented virtually by the OU COM Mark Allen Everett Department of Dermatology on Friday, May 8, 2026.

The purpose of the symposium is to:

1. Promote awareness of the unique features of skin of color.

2. Provide a forum to exchange valuable information regarding ethnic skin.

3. Educate health care providers, residents, fellows, students, aestheticians/cosmetologists and hair professionals about dermatologic diseases in skin of color.

4. Develop cultural awareness as it relates to skin of color in dermatology.

5. Expose attendees to nationally recognized experts in skin of color dermatology and health equity.

Statistics show that by 2045 the US will become majority black and brown people which will determine the health of our nation. It is imperative that healthcare workers, trainees, and related professionals are properly educated on the unique features of skin of color and health equity to improve the quality of patient care.  


ACCME Objectives
  1. Recognize the unique dermatologic features of skin of color.
  2. Manage dermatologic conditions in skin of color.
  3. Examine culture awareness as it relates to dermatology and the field of medicine at large.
  4. Develop effective patient-provider relationships.
  5. Positively change health outcomes for diverse populations.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Recognize and assess dermatologic conditions in patients with skin of color in nursing practice settings, including primary care, inpatient, and outpatient environments.
  2. Implement evidence-based nursing interventions and supportive care for patients with skin of color, considering unique risks and complications.
  3. Demonstrate culturally sensitive communication and patient education to enhance trust, adherence, and patient outcomes.
  4. Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to ensure accurate reporting, triage, and management of dermatologic conditions in diverse patient populations.
