Overview

Primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants often have the first opportunity to address long-acting reversible contraception options to their patients.  Focus Forward Oklahoma Provider Skills Training will provide healthcare professionals with accurate and up-to-date information, including the impact of contraceptive use, patient-centered contraceptive counseling methods, and placement of intrauterine devices and implants.  The one-day training will include a variety of learning formats including lectures, small group interactions and hands-on training in a simulation center. 


Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:


  1. Discuss the scope of the problem by emphasizing poor outcomes for women in Oklahoma .
  2. Describe impact of long acting reversible (LARC) contraception.
  3. Define long acting reversible contraception (LARC) options.
  4. Identify and access resources for contraceptive care.
  5. Summarize & demonstrate preparatory steps before intrauterine device (IUD) insertion.
  6. Explain & demonstrate how to insert all types of IUDs.
  7. Review & illustrate how to remove an IUD.
  8. Identify potential complications with IUD insertion/removal.
  9. Demonstrate methods to avoid and/or solve these concerns.
  10. Discuss factors involved in contraception choice.
  11. Develop techniques for contraception counseling.
  12. Describe and apply principles of patient-centered counseling.
  13. Formulate responses to common concerns and practice client-centered contraception counseling.

Registration

Thank you for your interest in attending the no-cost training on long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC). This training is being provided through a partnership established by the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA), the Clinical Skills Education and Training Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (CSETC), and the Simulation Center OU-Tulsa (SCOUT).

This training is being funded through donations from private organizations along with state and federal dollars. Therefore there are some restrictions to the training. Providers who attend the training must work in specialties that provide family planning services and they must see patients that are under 19 in their practice.

Each provider attending the training must complete a registration form. If you wish to schedule a training for your entire practice or more than one provider you can contact us directly. Photographs of the training sessions may be taken for reporting and promotional purposes.
