Overview
Toxicology Day is a single day conference targeting healthcare professionals that often care for patients with overdoses, envenomations, or other exposures. This includes: emergency medicine, critical care, family medicine, and internal medicine physicians and mid-level providers, pediatricians, pharmacists, and nurses. The activity will take place on the OUHSC campus and will entail both breakfast and lunch with afternoon snacks provided also. The content is described elsewhere but will be provided by content experts employed by the Oklahoma Center for Poison & Drug Information or the OU College of Pharmacy (geriatric content expert). Topics include: an introduction to the poison center and careers in toxicology, the general approach to the poisoned patient, toxic time bombs, toxicology in the news, emerging drugs of abuse, an antidote update, household products, over-the-counter products, cardiotoxic drugs, natural toxins, and pediatric/geriatric considerations. There will be a patient case and case-based lectures throughout.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. Identify the tools and resources offered by the local poison control center.
  2. Recognize the various professional paths available in regard to toxicology.
  3. Recognize toxidromes based on initial physical examination findings.
  4. Identify toxins known to cause delayed onset or recurrent toxicity.
  5. Develop an appropriate management strategy for the acutely poisoned patient.
  6. Describe emerging trends regarding toxicology in 2017-2018.
  7. Identify emerging threats to children in regard to toxic substances.
  8. Identify trends in illicit drug use in Oklahoma.
  9. Analyze a patient presentation to develop a toxicology differential diagnosis
  10. Name antidotes approved by the FDA in 2017-2018
  11. Classify these antidotes based upon their indications for use in toxicity
  12. Identify life-threatening exposures from household products
  13. Identify life-threatening exposures from over-the-counter medications
  14. Select the appropriate treatment modalities for a patient case
  15. Describe the mechanisms by which cardiotoxins have their effects
  16. Develop a treatment strategy for patients poisoned by a cardiotoxin
  17. Identify the native venomous species of Oklahoma
  18. Identify a treatment strategy to manage a patient envenomed by a pit viper
  19. List key differences in management of pediatric and geriatric poisoned patients
