Anoxic Brain Injury: Management and Prognostication, 23D07 - 1/31/2023

The Neurology department is composed of a diverse group of faculty members. Some practice neurology while others are sub-specialists who are experts in their field. We also have Advanced Practice Providers, residents, fellow(s) and students from OU College of Medicine. Our aim is to provide sessions which are of value to this diverse group of attendees, providing a mix of common and uncommon neurological conditions, while also including sessions targeting quality improvement, provider wellness and professional development. Each session is 1 hour long, with a question-answer session included at the end.

Overall Program Professional Practice Gaps:
1.  Guides to new anti-epileptic medications: There is a lack of knowledge regarding the newer anti-epileptic medications, their side effects and rationiale for appropriate utilization even in general neurologists.
2.  Frontotemporal dementia and Lewy Body dementia: Most neurologists are comfortable with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, however, diagnosis and management of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Lewy Body Dementia remains challenging.
3. Restless leg syndrome: Restless leg syndrome is a common movement disorder in the general population, however, it is still frequently misdiagnosed, under diagnosed and under treated.
4. Infectious encephalitis: Most practicing neurologists and neurohospitalists encounter infective encephalitis. While some of these entities are well recognized, there are many uncommon etiological factors which remain under diagnosed.

Session Professional Practice Gap:  
Anoxic brain injury is a potentially devastating condition that requires time sensitive intervention to prevent worsening injury.  It also requires an informed interpretation of multiple tests to deliver an individualized prognosis for patients and families.  Lack of knowledge in both of these areas can lead to suboptimal care and inaccurate prognostication.

Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this session, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:
List the interventions in the acute phase of anoxic brain injury that can improve outcome or prevent further worsening.
State the potential confounding factors for accurate neuroprognostication.
Identify the prognostic implications (favorable or unfavorable) of the components of multimodal prognostication.
