Overview

This is an intensive one day offering that includes a review and update on major subject areas in rheumatology. The faculty chosen to speak are recruited locally and from nationally recognized leaders in their fields. The topics are chosen from the prior years participant suggestions or areas with new treatments or diagnosis. The seminars are focused on practical diagnosis, treatment, and latest research in areas related to the successful delivery of rheumatology health care and patient outcomes. The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Rheumatology faculty is nationally recognized for their expertise in the management of complex conditions that is unavailable elsewhere in the state, region or sometimes even the nation. This is a very fast-paced symposium with five lectures and one hour of small group meetings to discuss patient cases. Each session will include time for questions and answers. The course combines best practice strategies and education through case studies and lectures.

ACCME Objectives
  1. From Antibodies to Cells: Efforts to Unravel the Complexities of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus GAPs: There is a lack or tools to tailor treatment to the needs of individual patients with lupus. There is limited value of SLE classification criteria to provide care to patients with systemic autoimmunity. There are limited tools to curve down organ damage accrual. GAPs: There is a lack or tools to tailor treatment to the needs of individual patients with lupus. There is limited value of SLE classification criteria to provide care to patients with systemic autoimmunity. There are limited tools to curve down organ damage accrual. Learning Objectives: Discuss the complex pathogenetic mechanisms in patients with lupus Discuss mechanisms of tissue injury Discuss current efforts to treat patients with lupus
  2. Systemic Sclerosis in Its Early Stages: Current and Future Approaches to Assessment, Diagnosis, And Personalized Management GAPS: 1. Diagnosis of systemic sclerosis is often delayed due to poor recognition of the early physical signs and suboptimal application of ANA testing 2. Personalized management of systemic sclerosis is hampered by insufficient prognostic and predictive tools Learning Objectives: 1. Recognize the physical manifestations of systemic sclerosis in its early stages 2. Describe the optimal use of ANA testing for diagnostic and prognostic purposes 3. Describe the potential future role of skin biopsies, circulating biomarkers, and genetics to personalize management of systemic sclerosis
  3. Describe key endogenous and diet-derived metabolites and metabolic pathways that promote or suppress inflammation in common rheumatic diseases. Explain the role of nutrition, and the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis and progression of inflammatory rheumatic conditions. Integrate current evidence on diet, metabolites, and inflammation to identify potential therapeutic and lifestyle-based interventions in rheumatology practice.
  4. Identify the common symptom complexes in MCTD. Apply appropriate treatment algorithms to MCTD patient cases. Define MCTD co-morbidities.
  5. 1. Familiarize the learner with the ACR Perioperative Guideline 2. Management of the patient with rheumatoid arthritis requiring multiple orthopedic procedures 3. Optimal timing for surgery in patients with lupus

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of lupus, scleroderma, and mixed connective disease.
  2. Optimize the management of autoimmune diseases to prevent organ damage.
