Overview

Pediatrics is a diverse specialty area encompassing all the systems of the body, and includes generalists and sub-specialists. Grand rounds is a weekly one hour presentation incorporating active learning techniques including: case studies, the audience responds to questions with audience response systems, small group discussions, panel discussions, and question and answer opportunities. Because of the diversity of pediatrics and the wide range of diverse clinical cases seen, a wide variety of topics are presented which are relevant to both generalists and sub-specialists.

Overall Program Professional Practice Gap:
Since general pediatrics is a diverse field with regularly changing, best-practice and guidelines, primary care physicians do not always recognize and know the most current approaches to care of all children with special health care needs.

Session Professional Practice Gaps: 
Gap 1: Practitioners might not know the difference between the usefulness of different serological tests for celiac disease and the rationale for preferring one test over the other.
Gap 2: Practitioners might not be aware of the high-risk group of the population which need to be screened for celiac disease.
Gap 3: Practitioners need to be made aware that genetic testing should not be done routinely to diagnose celiac disease.

Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this session, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to: 
•Discuss the rationale behind using different screening tests for celiac disease, based on their pretest probabilities and in the context of specific clinical needs  
•Identify the high-risk group for having celiac disease and implement the strategy to introduce celiac disease screening
