Overview
Our one-day course is aimed at community pediatric providers, including physicians, APRN’s, nurses, and social workers.  The course is taught by the pediatric palliative care team at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.  The four members of this team have a combined 18 years of experience in this field and are the only full time, full service pediatric palliative care providers in the state of Oklahoma.  The six lectures comprising the course were specifically curated to be high yield to a community pediatric practice.  Speakers will utilize didactic teaching with case-based learning and pre and post surveys to assess understanding.  The purpose of this course is to improve the care of chronic, complex pediatric patients in the community setting by equipping community caregivers with skills to better care for this population by addressing well know clinical practice gaps.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. 1. Describe perinatal and pediatric palliative care and when to refer a patient for these services.
  2. 2. Identify methods to support children with life threatening illnesses in a community-based practice by developing goals of care, managing symptoms that are commonly experienced by children with chronic illness, and supporting families through their experience with grief.
  3. 3. Identify factors that contribute to caregiver burnout when caring for sick children and how to modify these factors to prevent burnout.
