Overview
The 4th Annual Toxicology Education Day is a single-day conference geared toward healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with overdoses, envenomations, or other exposures. This includes emergency medicine, critical care, family medicine, and internal medicine physicians and mid-level providers, pediatricians, pharmacists, nurses, and pre-hospital providers. The activity will be offered virtually via Zoom. Topics delivered by experts in the fields of toxicology, emergency medicine, and critical care include: initial evaluation of the poisoned patient, evaluation of available analytical toxicology tests, riot control agents, a multidisciplinary roundtable, pediatric toxidromes, discerning toxicologic causes for hyperthermia, medical marijuana and the evidence surrounding it’s use for chronic pain, aspirin overdose, common bites and stings, a high-yield review for board exams, and toxicant-related lung injuries.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:

  1. Identify analytical toxicology tests available to support the management of poisoned patients presenting to emergency departments, and recognize advantages and disadvantages of commonly utilized clinical toxicology laboratory tests.
  2. Recognize the most utilized riot control agents by law enforcement and the purpose of each agent, and illustrate a treatment plan for a patient that presents with signs and symptoms after exposure to a riot control agent.
  3. Describe how healthcare providers of several different disciplines can work together in treating a poisoned patient.
  4. Recognize toxidromes based on initial physical examination findings in the pediatric patient, and Illustrate a treatment plan for a pediatric patient that presents with signs and symptoms of a particular toxidrome.
  5. Recognize the signs and symptoms associated with a large ingestion of aspirin-containing products, and illustrate a treatment plan for a patient that presents with signs and symptoms of a salicylate overdose.
